The Challenge

The homeowners were in their mid-60s and the bathtub was becoming increasingly difficult and unsafe to step over. The existing tub surround had cracked grout and signs of moisture behind the wall. They wanted a shower-only design that was beautiful but also safe and accessible as they age.

Our Solution

We removed the tub and rebuilt the shower area with a low-threshold entry (1.5-inch curb), grab bars that double as towel bars, a built-in tile bench, and a handheld showerhead on a slide bar. Large-format porcelain tile (12×24) was used on the walls for fewer grout lines and easier cleaning. Two recessed niches provide storage. A Kerdi waterproofing system ensures long-term moisture protection.

The Result

The homeowners now have a shower that is both safer and more enjoyable than what they had before. The grab bars and bench provide support without looking institutional, and the low-threshold entry eliminates the stepping hazard. The design is elegant enough that it also added value to the home.
