This 1974 ranch had its original single-pane aluminum-frame windows throughout. The frames were oxidized, several window locks were broken, and condensation formed on the inside of every window during winter mornings. The homeowners reported their furnace ran almost constantly from November through February, and street noise from a nearby arterial road was a constant annoyance. Idaho Power's home energy audit confirmed the windows were the home's largest source of heat loss.
We replaced all 18 windows with Milgard Trinsic Series vinyl windows featuring dual-pane Low-E glass with argon fill. Each window was custom-ordered to fit the existing openings for a full-frame replacement with minimal interior and exterior disruption. We removed the old frames completely, installed new flashing and waterproofing at every opening, shimmed and insulated with low-expansion foam, and finished with new interior and exterior trim. Three large picture windows received laminated glass for additional sound dampening along the street-facing wall.
The homeowners saw a 35% reduction in their Idaho Power heating bill the first winter after installation. Morning condensation is completely eliminated. Street noise is noticeably reduced, particularly with the laminated glass on the front-facing windows. The home also looks significantly more modern from the curb — neighbors have commented that it looks like a different house.
